Fall Youth Hockey

Rec League Hockey Game

Registration for youth hockey for the Winter 2012 Season began November 7th for current players and members.  Registration opens to the public on November 21st and will close on December 3rd, or when teams are full (whichever comes first). We will continue to strive to keep all the leagues balanced and fun for players of all ages. Any returning player registering before November 21st has the option to register for their Fall Season team or for the free agent list to be placed on a new team.

Our season lasts 16 weeks including 2 weeks of playoffs.  Teams play once per week usually on their designated evening with an occasional game on Saturdays.  All practices are during the day on Saturday.  All 8U, 10U and 12U teams get assigned 5 practices across the season which are scheduled before the start of the season.  Coaches can get additional practice based on rink availability by contacting Matt at Matt@dreamsportscenter.com.  Older teams get less practice but may schedule more based on rink availability.

8U, 10U, and 12U are split into two divisions each:

Beginner (Black) and Intermediate (Red) Division. While we reserve the right to return to the combined structure if demand falls below 4 teams per division, we expect, based on the strong Learn-to-Play program that we will continue forward with this structure. This creates less diversity in skill level between players, allowing all players to have a more enjoyable game experience and also develop their skills quicker.  Teams will get a minimum of 5 practices per season.

8U Black games will continue to be Cross Ice.  This follows the USA Hockey Player Development Model.  This is being done to try and improve the rate of improvement for our youngest players.  Team size will be less allowing all players more playing time. 8U Black games are two 15 minute periods with 20 minutes of professional instruction before each game. 8U Red games are three 15 minute periods. All 8U Black games change lines every 3 minutes and will be limited to 8 Players maximum per team. Red division teams change on the fly. All players are encouraged to try the goalie position at this age group. Equipment is available on-loan from Dreamsports for players to try out the Goalie position. All other divisions will continue to play three 15 minute periods with stop-clock only in the final two minutes when there is a 2 goal differential or tie. Ties at the end of regulation will result in a 5 minute overtime followed by a 3-person shootout if necessary. In the playoffs, ties at the end of regulation will result in a 10 minute overtime followed by a shootout.

Age Restrictions: Players must play in their age group with the following exceptions: Players may play up only if they are already registered to play for a team in their own age group.  Travel Players (Action, Dragon, or independent) must play in the Red Division of their age group. Players wishing to play on multiple teams may play on two adjacent age/skill divisions (e.g. 10U Red/12U Black). Age eligibility is determined by a player’s age during the season. Players with a birthday during the season may choose which age group to play.

14U: single division, minimum age 13 years old. Teams get 4 practices.
Jr. Pro: single division, minimum age is 15 years old. Teams get 2 team practices.

Intact league: minimum age is 14, max 17. This is our most competitive youth league. Rosters are managed by the teams and Dreamsports makes no commitment to attempt to keep balance in the league.

Goalie discounts applied in 10U and up only if a player commits to play the goalie position primarily.

Only the Dreamsports reversible rec jersey is allowed in all divisions except the Intact league. Teams may choose an alternate jersey in the Intact league only if all players wear the same jersey.

Required Equipment: All players must have in-line hockey skates, shin guards, in-line hockey pants, hockey gloves, elbow pads, a helmet with a face cage and an attached colored mouthguard and a hockey stick.  Outdoor rollerblades and hockey sticks with plastic blades are strongly discouraged as they are not designed to work well on our rink surface or with an in-line puck.

Registration: Existing players may register for the team they are currently playing for or for the Free Agent team in the appropriate age group. We will continue to make every effort to meet all team/coach requests while attempting to achieve balance where appropriate. New Players in 12U and lower should choose which division they wish to register for and sign up for the Free Agent team in that division. There will be a space in the registration form to indicate a preference for team mates or a particular coach.  Travel players should indicate on their registration form which travel team they are currently playing for.

This past season we also introduced a 5 goal maximum per player rule.  We are continually monitoring feedback on our rules and hope to continue to improve the playing experience for our players while sticking to the AAU rule book as much as possible. Please contact Matt Messner if you have any questions or feedback. His email is Matt@dreamsportscenter.com.
